Our motor vehicle apprenticeships are suitable for anyone looking to develop a career in the motor industry, involving the repair and maintenance of both heavy and light vehicles. With over 32 million vehicles registered on UK roads, there is always a strong need for motor vehicle technicians to help keep them roadworthy.

Our learners are able to learn a wide range of skills relevant to motor skills:

  • Maintenance and repair of light and heavy vehicles
  • Inspection, repair and replacement of vehicle tyres
  • Gain knowledge of materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices
  • Wheel alignment, clutches, exhausts, vehicle batteries and much more

Our motor vehicle apprenticeships could have you working in a variety of different roles; you may be working for a particular vehicle manufacturer, an independent garage, a company with its own vehicle fleet or perhaps a racing team.

Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Heavy

Level 2

IPS’s intermediate apprenticeship in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (Heavy Vehicle) is aimed at learners looking to start or develop their career in the motor industry. Those who complete the apprenticeship will be trained to move on to roles a variety of roles, perhaps in a specialist repair workshop or working as a vehicle fitting specialist.

Level 3

IPS’s intermediate apprenticeship in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (Heavy Vehicle) is aimed at learners looking to build upon their current motor vehicle skills and move on to the next level. Learners will already have a good level of technical skills and knowledge and will be able to train towards Heavy Vehicle Diagnostic Technician or supervisory roles.

 

Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Light

Level 2

IPS’s intermediate apprenticeship in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (Light Vehicle) is aimed at learners looking to start or develop their career in the motor industry. Those who complete the apprenticeship will be trained to move on to roles a variety of roles, perhaps in a specialist repair workshop or working as a vehicle fitting specialist. This practical qualification demonstrates the learner’s skills on the job, showing that they meet the national standards for automotive workers. The structure and assessment of this
course has been produced by the Institute of the Motor Industry, who are the Sector Skills Council for the
Automotive Industry.

Level 3

IPS’s intermediate apprenticeship in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (Light Vehicle) is aimed at learners looking to build upon their current motor vehicle skills and move on to the next level. Learners will already have a good level of technical skills and knowledge and will be able to train towards Heavy Vehicle Diagnostic Technician or supervisory roles.

Functional Skills

Functional Skills are commonly needed for success in range of activities, whether in education, training, work or life in general.

The three primary functional skills units are:

  • English
  • Information Technology
  • Mathematics

These units will require an external assessment test and must be successfully completed along with the Diploma.

Requirements

Applicants for our Motor Vehicles apprenticeships should usually be 16-17 years old and will have completed compulsory education. Previous experience and qualifications in Motor Vehicles is not required however.

Applicants will be invited for an aptitude test which will assess the following:

  • Verbal Understanding
  • Numerical Reasoning
  • Mechanical Concepts
  • Fault Diagnosis

Those who complete their apprenticeships can look to pursue further work in the industry as motor vehicle technicians, developing their skills and expertise further. From here, there are many options to further develop their careers within the motor industry.
